It is an ideal place to observe ancient civilization with Buddhist ruins. It is believed to have been built by King Devanampiyatissa. It was later repaired by King Agbo II, Vijayabahu I and Parakramabahu I. The important point here is that the Welgam Raja Maha Viharaya was used in the past to worship all Sinhala and Tamil Buddhists. Hindus call it the Natanar Kovil. This was probably the reason why the temple was not destroyed by the Chola invaders.
Here you can see Tamil inscriptions, moonstone bricks, stone carvings, image houses, watchtowers, etc. have. The most significant feature here is the tall stone Buddha statue. You can also see many ruins at this place.
