Colombo - Shri Ponnambalawaneswaram Kovil

Sri Ponnambalavaneswaram is one of the few granite Hindu temples still in existence in Sri Lanka. In 1857 Ponnambalam Mudaliar, a local minor master, liked offered a pilgrimage to the Hindus in Colombo. The history of Sri Ponnambalavaneswaram Kovil is more than a century old. Many were destroyed by wars or foreign invasions. However, the stone structure is a temple built in accordance with the ancient Hindu Vedic texts. Designed by qualified temple builders and sculptors who come from the families of the temple builders, the design according to the human structure, some design features and other features incorporated into the sculpture.

The builders of Sri Ponnambalavaneswaram came from a long line of workers who built temples for generations. They had an apprenticeship under their family and learned the high skills acquired from their ancestors. As a result, the temple work is so detailed and accurate that it seems like life-like sculptures are ready to stand up and walk.

Height Gopuram (traditional conical temple boundary similar to the Maya Devalas but more complex); Soaring roofs, elegant arches, beautifully carved tower; Finely carved and carved walls; Swans, cattle, peacocks, guardian dwarfs, sculptures of gods and goddesses, and many more that adorn the roof of each shrine; All this makes Sri Ponnambalavaneswaram a work of art that makes Sri Lanka proud.

According to the Vedas, the human body is considered the microscope of the vast universe. To demonstrate this concept, all Hindu Kovils are made in the correct way. The principal shrine is the headquarters, or the primary place of communication, representing the heart and the center of the universe. The remaining shrines are placed around it. The manner in which the devotees worship at the temple is like the flow of blood through vessels or the universe rotating around its axis. They originate from the headquarters (heart); Go to all the shrines that represent the major organs and bring their worship back to heart. This concept can be observed in Sri Ponnambalavaneswaram.

The temple is extremely dark, because it is made of stone and has no windows; Except for spaces left for air. Large doors with three sides of the same light. It resembles caves in some places. Darkness is a resting place for all bats in the area. So when you walk through the temple, it is not a rare sight to see a wolf wings.
