The Shiva Temple (No. 1) is located in the old town of Polonnaruwa, between the Royal Palace Complex and the Sacred Square. The builder of this Hindu shrine is not clearly identified. But this is not the case with AD. It is believed to have been built by South Indian invaders in the 13th century. It was built according to Pandya architectural style.
The shrine was mainly made of stone and was very precise and no plastering was done to connect the bricks.
You can see inside the Shiva Lingam stone. It is still worshiped by the people even today. By now you cannot see the roof of this Siva temple, but believe it was made of brick. The Siva Devalaya in Polonnaruwa has been discovered by the Archaeology Department.
