
Ruwanwelisaya is one of the most magnificent ancient monuments of the Sinhala Buddhist heritage of Anuradhapura. The Ruwanwelisaya Sthupa is also known as Rathnamali Dagaba, Swarnamali Chaitya, and Mahatupa. It was built by King Dutugamunu (161-137 BC), the Hero of the Nation. The sacred relics of the Buddha are placed here and one of the “Solosmasthana” and “Atamasthana” place Considered. It is also one of the tallest ancient monuments in the world. Its present height is 103 meters and its circumference is 290 meters. The original stupa was 55 meters in height and is of many kings renovated it. The Mahavanshaya contains a detailed account of the construction of the stupa and the opening ceremony.
