Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established in 1975 under the concept of honor Minister Kalugalle. It aims to provide protection to orphaned elephants found in many parts of Sri Lanka. It is located in a 25-acre coconut land adjoining Ma Oya. The goal of the orphanage is to mimic a natural habitat for these elephants. Elephants are taken to the river for bathing twice a day. Each animal is given about 76 kilograms of green matter per day and about 2 kilograms of foodstuff containing rice bran and corn. Many local and foreign tourists are attracted to the elephant bathing scene. Also, a considerable number of books and research articles on Pinnawala have been written in various languages.
