
This region, which has been identified as one of the most floristically rich regions in South Asia, is the second largest rainforest in Sri Lanka. The Gin and Nilwala rivers, one of the most important rivers in the Southern Province, are fed by this region. Also, Designated as a biosphere reserve in 2004 by UNESCO, the Kanneliya forest reserve home to many endemic plant and animal species.
About 17% of the lowland endemic flora is endemic to this area and about 41 endemic animal species live there. There are many beautiful views to see in Kanneliya Rainforest. Among them, Anagimale Ella is the main one.
