This was my first visit to Harpo’s Pizza, a homegrown business taking on the franchises of more established global brands. I was excited to see what Harpo’s has to offer, as I have seen plenty of positive feedback about them.
We went to the Nugegoda branch, I was giving a treat to my colleagues for my birthday. It was around 12pm when we got there and the place was almost empty. The interior is somewhat bland, but clean nonetheless. Nothing much to say about the ambience and the staff was ready help upon request.
We ordered the Mediterranean veg pizza and Pizza Marco Polo, a meat lover’s choice with chicken, ham, beef and chicken sausages. Since I am a vegetarian I didn’t go for it but by the looks it seems nice with all the ingredients, but outnumbered by the veg pizza which looks amazing with all the vegetables tossed in.
I have a relatively limited choice when it comes to pizza and first thing I noticed is the cheese, which is very soft and non-greasy like many of the franchise pizzas used. It was very easy on the stomach. Yet somehow, it wasn’t the most delicious pizza either. Maybe it’s the black olives which stand out the rest of the flavors. My colleague complained there is less salt.
On the other side, the meaty Marco Polo is winning my colleagues. They said it taste really good, comparing to other pizzas of the same category. Honestly, I think Harpo’s can experiment more with the vegetarian range a bit more.
After having two twelve inch pizzas between four of us, the meat eaters were full. But we vegetarians were not. Credit goes to Harpo’s here because as they mentioned they are not using any artificial flavorings or additives and the food is really easy on the tummy.
Then I decided to order zucchini, a bread with tomato and vegetables for the second round. This was beyond expectations. The bread was really well done, filled with juicy tomatoes and vegetables. Come to think of it, the vegetarian pizza was baked bit too much and the base was burned a little. Maybe ite because they are using wood fired oven.
Overall we liked the experience. The staff was all right but can do with a bit of communication. I asked the cashier about the salt in the pizza, he told me they only add a bit of salt to the toppings and the cheese is in good quality, which I agreed.
Verdict: good pizza, room to improvement, can do with a bit of interior decoration.
