
Dehiwala Zoological Garden is one of the oldest Zoological Gardens in Asia, founded in 1936. Major Aubrey Neil Weinman was the first director of the Dehiwala zoo. He also introduced animal shows such as the elephant performance and the chimpanzee tea party.
The Zoo has animal shows such as elephant performance, educational program on chimps and Sea lion performance.
It’s claimed to have 3350 animals including 100 spices of mammals, 110 pieces of birds, 65 pieces of fish, 34 species of reptiles, 30 species of the butterfly, 10 kind of marine invertebrates and 3 kinds of amphibians. The annual revenue is LKR 40 Million. Also, the zoological garden has an aquarium with 22 tanks, a butterfly garden with small shrubs, trees, creepers, and small streams, etc.
