
Located in the near of the Sri Maha Bodhi Temple, it is popularly known as the Bahirawakanda Buddha Statue. The Bahirawakanda Buddha statue is 88 feet high and is considered to be the largest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka. The statue is carved in a manner that the Buddha is seated. And you can see it all over Kandy in white color.
The construction of this Buddha statue commenced in the 1972s and was completed by the public in 1993 and made available to the public. The Chief Incumbent of Ampitiye Dhammarama Nayaka Thero was responsible for the construction of this temple and the Buddha statue with the initiative of the people of the area. The temple is a center for international Buddhist relations. The temple attracts a large number of tourists. Especially they come to see and worship the huge Buddha statue.
Climbing up the stairs behind the statue of the Buddha, you get a better view of the area. However, the best time to visit the Bhairavakanda Buddha Statue is at night. The whole statue was illuminated at night.
